This launch conference brings back the European Week Against Cancer (EWAC) to take place 25-31 May each year.  The aim of the EWACs are to communicate the 11 evidence-based messages in the European Code Against Cancer.  The theme for this 2011 launch conference was on the lifestyle messages of the code (1-6), namely

  • Do not smoke; if you smoke, stop doing so. If you fail to stop, do not smoke in the presence of non-smokers
  • Avoid Obesity
  • Undertake some brisk, physical activity every day
  • Increase your daily intake and variety of vegetables and fruits: eat at least five servings daily. Limit your intake of foods containing fats from animal sources
  • If you drink alcohol, whether beer, wine or spirits, moderate your consumption to two drinks per day if you are a man and one drink per day if you are a woman
  • Care must be taken to avoid excessive sun exposure.

The EWAC Launch Conference took place on 25 May 2011 at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.  See the Press Release here.

Keynotes were made by President of the European Council Mr Herman Van Rompuy (click here to see speech) and Commission for Health and Consumer Policy Mr John Dalli.  Acting NAT Chair Mr Michael Cohen, ECL President Prof Tezer Kutluk, and MEP and MAC President Mr Alojz Peterle were among the distinguished guests supporting the launch.
