European Week Against Cancer 2016 

Information on EWAC Youth Competiton on Polish Cancer Code Website The European Week Against Cancer (EWAC) was inaugurated in Poland on May 19, during a specially organized press conference at the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology. The conference was opened by Professor Jan Walewski - Director of the Institute. Invited speakers: Mrs. Katarzyna Glowala - under-secretary of state at Polish Ministry of Health, Dr Joanna Didkowska, head of the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Department at the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology and Professor Maciej Krzakowski - national consultant of clinical oncology in Poland have presented European Cancer Code, cancer epidemiology data in Poland and scope of activities planned during the European Week Against Cancer in Poland.
After the conference, information about planned events was published by Polish Press Agency and many media outlets, including press and websites. Representatives of Cancer Center have also promoted events during an interview conducted by Polish National Radio.

On May 21st EWAC activities were inaugurated at the Cancer Prevention Center in the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center in Warsaw. The "White Saturday" event was an open day, during which every person visiting Cancer Prevention Center received a leaflet with information about cancer prevention. Various educational materials about cancer code, including brochures and comic books for children and adolescents were shared out among visiting persons. All participants were also offered a free diagnostics (mammography, cytology), smoking cessation counseling, blood pressure and sugar level measurements. Approximately 450 persons have participated in the events. All of them were offered fresh apples provided by local producers and vouchers for free training session at chosen gym or swimming pool provided by local sport center. During the event, representatives of Ministry of Health and Cancer Center were interviewed by many media outlets, including national TV and radio channels. Information on EWAC was published by the Employers of Poland in their newsletter that reaches over 12 thousand companies in Poland.
The Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Department at the Cancer Center was responsible for dissemination of information about the EWAC Youth Competition in Poland. The information was disseminated through Polish cancer code website (www.kodekswalkizrakiem.pl) and through newsletters and websites of local Departments of Education in March and April 2016. The competition has gained wide interest, as 264 of entries have been submitted by Polish schools. One of the entries from Poland, prepared by five students from the high school in Bilgoraj has won the whole competition. The information on the winning entry was sent to Polish media agencies and was published on several local and nation-wide news portals.
